Shop, eat and stroll in beautiful Montclair Village! Photo and © by Daniel Olsen, 2006
Montclair is located in the woodsy Northeast Oakland Hills, near Hwy 13. The cozy shopping district of Montclair Village is at the bottom of the valley and connects to bicycle and walking trails, which wind up into the mountainside. It is not unusual to see a couple sporting REI gear and trail runners pop out from a hidden trail behind Walgreens and head to the Montclair Egg Shop for coffee and brunch. The community has a small-town feel, and the shops and businesses are mostly independently owned and operated—some passed down generations. The architectural theme of the Village is reminiscent of a Swiss mountain town, with pitched roofs, dark shingles and white-trimmed windows. Many of the single-family houses in the neighborhood are tucked into the wooded landscape off winding, narrow roads; the houses themselves range from old cottages to modern mansions, and feature breathtaking views of the San Francisco bay. Montclair is overall an endearing and rare neighborhood to find within the large and bustling city of Oakland.
